Shakuhachi is a Japanese bamboo Flute traditionally played by Zen monks as they wandered through the Japanese countryside. It was part of a Zen practice known as "suizen" or blowing Zen. |
|
|
The traditional Shakuhachi repertoire is
called 'Honyoku' or 'Original pieces'; pieces that have been handed down
from teacher to student for hundreds of years.
In the past, Honkyoku were only played and recorded by men. Ms. Danbrook's fresh approach, incorporating both voice and cello into formally solo pieces lends a unique quality to this ancient music. |
